Notice of Non-Discriminating Policy as to Students

The Sheet Metal Workers’ Local #20 Apprenticeship Program admits Students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.  It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of it’s educational policies, or any other school administered programs.

Applicants who apply for the Pre-Apprentice program during the application process for the Apprenticeship Program will be placed in the Pre-Apprentice program as soon as possible.  If the applicant has a positive Pre-Apprentice drug test or an incomplete drug test, he/she will not be placed on the Apprenticeship waiting list for six months from the date of the positive or incomplete drug test.  The applicant may continue with the applications process (test, information session and personal interviews).  After the six months waiting period, his/her name will be placed on the list and will be placed into the program according to his/her ranked score, providing he/she passes the drug test.

Instructions to Applicants

Note: Applicants must be at least 18 by the time they enter their apprenticeship. Applicants must have a high school diploma or have passed their G.E.D.

  1. Applications must be completed in full and signed.  Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  2. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and reside within the jurisdiction of the Local #20 Evansville Area.
  3. Applicants are required to take an assessment test that is made up of three sections:
    • Math – Percentages, Decimals, Fractions, Basic Algebra
    • Mechanical Reasoning – Gears, Pulleys, Leverage
    • Space Relations – Example given here

    The Assessment test is usually given every two or three months.  Applicants will be notified by mail of the exact date, time, and place of the assessment test.  If you can’t take the test on your scheduled date, please call our office to be rescheduled for the next test date.  You can only be rescheduled to take the test one time.  If you do not call to reschedule and do not show up for the test, you must call our office within two weeks to be rescheduled or your application will be void.  If you are rescheduled and fail to show up for the next test, your application will be void, no exceptions.  If your application becomes void, you will not be allowed to fill out a new application for six months after your last scheduled test date.
    Applicants must pass all three sections of the assessment test to proceed in the application process.  If you do not pass the assessment test, you will be notified by mail of your failure.  You may reschedule the part(s) of the test that you failed.  However, if you have not called to reschedule before the next assessment test is given, you will be required to fill our a new application and it will be necessary for you to take all three sections of the test the next time it is offered.

  4. Applicants who pass all three sections of the assessment test will be notified by mail.  At this time, it will be necessary for the applicant to furnish a complete transcript of his/her high school, college, and technical school grades, copy of diploma or original G.E.D. Certification with scores (if applicable), and a copy of his/her birth certificate.  All required documents must be in our office before the Initial and Personal Interviews can be scheduled.
  5. Upon completion of the above, you will be notified by mail as to the date, time, and place of your Initial Interview.  At that time, the qualifying point system and the Apprenticeship Program will be explained to you.  After the Initial Interview, you will be scheduled for your Personal Interview.
  6. It is entirely the responsibility of the applicant to notify the SMW #20 J.A.C. office of any change of address or phone number.  It is also your responsibility to check back with us every 30 days after we have received your application concerning the status of your test date.

Appeal Procedure

You have the right to appeal, within 180 days, any decision made by the Joint Apprentice Committee concerning your application, qualifying, or the selection procedure.  Notify the Coordinator of his secretary by phone and then follow with a written appeal to the Joint Apprentice Committee.

Complaint Procedure

Any apprentice or applicant for apprenticeship who believes that he or she has been discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex with regard to apprenticeship or that the equal opportunity standards with respect to his or her selection have not been followed in the operation of an apprenticeship program may, personally or through an authorized representative, file a complaint with the Department, or, at the apprentice's or applicant's election, with a private review body established pursuant to subparagraph (3) of the paragraph. The complaint shall be in writing and shall be signed by the complainant. It must include the name, address and telephone number of the person allegedly discriminated against, the program sponsor involved, and a brief description of the circumstances of the failure to apply the equal opportunity standards provided for in this part.

The complaint must be filed not later than 180 days from the date of the alleged discrimination or specified failure to follow the equal opportunity standards; and, in the case of complaints filed directly with review bodies designated by program sponsors to review such complaints, any referral of such complaint by the complainant to the Department must occur within the time limitation stated above or 30 days from the final decision of such review body, whichever is later. The time may be extended by the Department for good cause shown.

If accepted into the Apprentice Program, the mandatory requirements for completion of the program are:

  • A minimum of five years from date of indenture into the Apprenticeship Program.
  • A minimum of 115 school days attended. (Partially paid and subject to change.) There is no school pay for evenings and weekends.
  • A minimum of 9,300 hours of On the Job Training
  • Each Apprentice will be required to sign an International Training Institute Scholarship Loan Agreement prior to the start of each year of their apprenticeship.
  • During your Apprenticeship, you will take a leave of absence and become employed by Sheet Metal Workers Local #20 for a 6-month period to work as Union Organizers in the Youth to Youth Program. If you have any questions about this program, we will be happy to answer them.

Any false statement made on this application will result in immediate disqualification.

It is my responsibility to inform the J.A.C. office of any address changes. I also agree to remain in contact with the office every 30 days after I have turned in my application regarding the status of my test date.
